Peyton Manning+Denver Broncos are heading to SuperBowl XLVII! Top 3 NFL Business Tips

Friday, January 04, 2013 by Tom Zulanas

Peyton Manning + Denver Broncos2012 has been a Very Good Year for Peyton Manning & the Denver Broncos!

On March 20, 2012, Peyton Manning joined the Denver Broncos ...and at that moment, there was a HUGE shift in the NFL as one of the Greatest Quarterbacks (next to John Elway) moved west and nothing less than a SuperBowl trip was the NEW expectation for the Denver Broncos.

Sure, many had a GREAT 2012 ...but, when one of the BEST joins your organization, as a business owner, simply get out of the way and enjoy the ride.

Just like Pat Bowlen did - allowing John Elway, John Fox and Peyton Manning to take over and drive his Denver Broncos organization all the way to the TOP...and by the looks of it, to SuperBowl XLVII in the Mercede-Benz SuperDome in New Orleans, LA on February 3, 2013.

I couldn't pass along this opportunity to start thinking about the various Business Tips the NFL is giving us, the small business owners.  Here's the TOP 3 Business Tips I see from the NFL & the Denver Broncos:

Business Tip #1 - Hire the RIGHT People & Promote your Superstars

The NFL uses & promotes their Superstars! ...Lucky for the Denver Broncos in 2012 - the Broncos had the Face of the NFL with them: Peyton Manning.

Looking at last year (2011), the NFL was promoting the New York Giants & Peyton's brother, Eli Manning; and the face of the New England Patriots is Tom Brady ...and the Denver Broncos (in 2011) was Tim Tebow.  It was crazy here in Denver, being ground zero for Tebow-Time & Tebowing; as it swept across the nation.  All of that changed on March 20, 2012 as Peyton made his decision ...and the local sports-radio station started their campaign for PFM - it's short for Peyton "Freaking" Manning.

Anytime you find a Superstar, you (as a business owner) want to get out of the way for them to do their magic.  Fortunately for Pat Bowlan & the Denver Broncos, John Elway didn't rest on the Denver Broncos 2011-12 playoffs WIN against the Pittsburg Steelers and Tim Tebow's best scoring pass to Demaryius Thomas on the 1st play from scrimmage in Overtime.

The sport-radio station kept saying: "we're talking about PFM - Peyton "Freaking" Manning!" ...Peyton is one of the ALL-TIME Great NFL Quarterbacks.  What's there to explain in this decision?

John Elway & John Fox celebrate at Sports Authority FieldBut, before the Denver Broncos could get Peyton Manning; Pat Bowlen hired John Elway to be his right hand person (VP of Football Operations) ...and John Elway had hired John Fox to be the head coach.  In any organization, you NEED to HIRE the RIGHT PEOPLE & allow them to do what they do BEST.  The results for 2012-13 season: the Denver Broncos recorded a 13-3 season, secured the #1 seed in the AFC playoffs - getting a 1st week bye, home field advantage.

...and according to the Odds makers in Las Vegas, the Denver Broncos are one of the Favorites to play in SuperBowl XLVII - on February 3, 2013 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La.  A number of our friends are already booking their trips.

Business Tip #2 - Know your Business & Who REALLY is your Competition

If you think the Denver Broncos chief competitor is the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs or San Diego Chargers ...I think you're still wearing your NFL fan hat; and need to start thinking about the NFL business.

Every business is selling you something.  When you think about how does the NFL makes money will start to discover all of the different businesses (entertainment: TV & ticket sales, jerseys, T-shirts, posters, key-chains, food & beverages, parking, etc.)  From FoxSports reporter: Rick Horrow on Dec. 30,2012 - he says this past year (2012) the NFL had $9.5 billion in Revenue ...and is expecting their growth to continue to $20 billion in Revenue by 2015-16.  That's more than doubling their growth in 4-5 years.  Most teams averaged $500 million in Revenue this past year and have an estimated value of $1.2 billion.

So, the local teams; whether that is the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Charges, etc.; are just the local NFL franchise ...more like the local McDonalds restaurant.  The NFL as a whole, is competing for Advertising, corporate & team sponsors, skyboxes/tickets, merchandise revenue ...and competition against all of the other forms of entertainment ...from the NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, concerts, movies, theatre & other TV shows (but it comes down - they are competing for YOUR Time & Money).

The local teams are where the front lines are ...selling you their brand, image, access, gear & experience. Just to think, there are so many levels within the marketing of the NFL - TV revenues from CBS, NBC & ESPN (and recently, their own NFL Network) - merchandising of: EASports Madden NFL - Fantasy Football - local & national news-TV/radio/newspapers & magazines - etc. the point that the NFL has become it's own economic engine.

As a small business owner, your business can jump on the band wagon too.  Think about ways you can connect and engage with these Fans & Fanatics.  One way is to participate with them; doing what they LIKE to do - being a FAN of that team.  Remember, it's NOT about YOU.  IT is about THEM and what they LIKE to DO! ...talking about the team; great plays / moments at the game; funny things about the fans, ticket give-aways; sponsor a tailgate party; or watch the game together somewhere - etc.  You can be the conduit, or provide them a place to keep enjoying themselves while the Broncos keep WINNING!

Of course, you don't want use the Vegas Rule: "What Happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!"  You WANT to get noticed and post pictures, Tweet it, Facebook it, blog about it, Google+ hangout, etc. Make Connections on social media and let the FUN Begin!

Business Tip #3 - Know Your History & Process do you get your (Customers) FANS

The evolution process of the NFL is what most people forget about: ...Pro Football has evolved over 120 years. Pro Football was born from evidence of a $500 cash payment to William "Pudge" Heffelfinger to play in the football game between the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.  This evidence was discovered some 80 years after the game had been played; and is part of the history shown on the Pro Football's Hall of Fame website. Thus making this accounting sheet the birth certificate of today's NFL.

Pro Football really gained traction from the popularity of College Football and their bowl games that gained national attention

How do you identify your customers? ...for the NFL, they see any college football fan as a possible NFL fan.  The NFL doesn't stop thinking about just a little area ...but across the nation & now, having a world-wide audience.

How are you expanding your area ...for NEW customers?

Since moving to Denver in 1999 from Chicago, I have had to learn the local dynamics of Denver & Colorado.  Denver is home to FIVE main professional sports teams: Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Rockies (MLB), Colorado Rapids (MLS), and the Denver Broncos (NFL). But, Denver is a NFL town - as anything about the Denver Broncos is NEWS - player injuries - trades - accidents - etc.  John Elway has been the face of the Broncos for over 20yrs ...and now, Peyton Manning is getting his share of the spot-light.

Our challenge as a small business owner - raising our game to being On-Top industry expert & leader; having BIG Goals & doing the little things that will make a difference.
